MEDITERRÁNEA COLLECTION

“Reimagining zellige”

Is it possible to create contemporary designs when working with a millenary artisanal technique? That was the question we asked ourselves when we started learning about the geometry in the Alhambra and about the zellige.

Then, we started working together with designer Damián López, from Leblume design studio, trying to reimaigine this ancient technique from a contemporary perspective.

Mediterránea collection is the result of a project that began with that simple question.

This collection has been designed for the firm todobarro in collaboration with the company Aït Manos.

MEDITERRANEAN INSPIRATION

After receiving the briefing from todobarro, we started studying this manufacturing technique.

During the design process, we found inspiration in the Mediterranean sea, a link between both cultures and countries. Between Spain and Morocco. Between todobarro and Aït Manos.

6 DESIGNS AND ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

After many ideas, trials and prototypes, the result is a collection that includes 6 different designs inspired by different elements from the Andalusian and Moroccan culture such as line, rattan, the leather crafts, the tiles from the Alhambra and the Alboran sea.

FULLY HANDCRAFTED

Thanks to the extra laborious handcrafted work made by the artisans, these designs became true in the form of 20x20 and 30x30cm. pre-assembled tiles. This innovative way of presenting zellige mosaics makes the installation process much easier and precise.

PRE-ASSEMBLED TILES

There are 6 different families of designs. Each family includes different preassembled tiles and, by playing with them, you can create almost endless patterns.

FROM THE SKETCHES TO THE RESULTS

It took almost two years to develope this collection. We had to learn about zellige trying to understand how these pieces are made and how the patterns had to be designed. After that, we started designing different patterns that were later prototyped. After some more trials, we ended up with these 6 final designs.
